This year my friends, family and I have decided that we will not be exchanging any presents. There’s been too many years of gift giving, where we give just for the sake of having something to open, and so it doesn’t look so bare under the tree.
No one needs any socks or underwear, or a pair of slippers. And while every women loves a bottle of wine, or a gift card to Victoria Secret, personally, I would rather help out someone who could really use the extra love.
My mom thought it would be a good idea, because who doesnt love to give, that we all make donations in each others name to the organization, foundation or cause of our choice.
This year I will be making my donations to the Friends of Andy Irons Trust Fund:
We all know how much of a special person Andy Irons was and how he touched our lives. He was a leader in our sport but most of all was a great friend that had a huge heart. Last week his wife Lyndie gave birth to their little boy. I know everyone is keen to help out so I wanted to let you all know that there has been a trust fund set up to help out Lyndie and the baby. If you would like to donate some money please use the bank details below. Lets show our love once again by helping a family member of our surfing community.
Your love and support is greatly appreciated. Thanks and always remember Andy Irons will never be forgotten. Peace.

Ok, so even though I am not supposed to be giving gifts….(Its so hard not too!) I will be gifting a few of my Alex & Ani bangle sets to some of the beautiful women in my life.
If you want to stoke out a lovely lady in your life, these are made of fully recycled material, making them super chic and eco friendly. I’ve been working with Zee Berry & Alex and Ani over the last 6 months designing this set of bangles that we named: The Good Path.
This set was inspired by the tattoo I got in Bali last year, written in Balinese it reads: “Find and follow the good path”.
There are 5 bangles total. 1 gold bangle with an emerald charm, and 1 silver bangle with the “Path of Life” charm, along with 1 plain gold bangle, and 2 plain silver bangles. The great thing about these bangles is they look great worn separately or stacked all together.
The Path of Life charm is emblematic of life’s zenith and nadir moments, this charm illustrates life’s twists, turns and unexpected winds, all the while complimenting the beauty in its pattern. Wear this charm to proudly celebrate your own willingness and strength in traveling towards life’s fruitful moments.
The emerald charm, besides for being my birthstone(May), has been known to calm a troubled mind bringing the wearer reason and wisdom. A sacred stone of the goddess Venus, emerald is thought to preserve love and is a symbol of hope.
I couldn’t be more stoked on how they turned out :)
They are available now, ONLY at:
If you are planning on exchanging presents this year, my advice is to A.) Buy local: There are so many great items people are making right in your neighborhood. Gifts that are unique, come from the heart, and already have a lot of love and good energy built into them, while ultimately supporting your community and boosting the local economy. B.) Make something! Tis the season for arts & crafts! Christmas ornaments are a good idea, or cookie mix in an mason jar is always a fun one! C.) Donate to a charity, organization or cause of your choice. There are tons out there, if there is one calling your name, don’t hesitate! D.) Ebay! I recently started selling a ton of stuff on ebay, as I prepare to move into my dream beach house, which is way smaller than the place I am in now, and I couldn’t be happier about its cozy beachy abodeness. But seriously, there are some good deals on Ebay! If you are thinking about getting something for someone, see if you can find it on Ebay! Chances are it will be less than what you pay for if it was brand new, or you might find something even better! I have found so much good stuff on there that I had no idea existed! For instance, do you know how many girls out there buy super expensive purses brand new, only to sell them a couple months later? Now thats what I call a deal!!!! Recycling at its finest!
Either way, have a Very Merry Happy Holiday friends!
2011 is gonna be the jam!
I just wrote my letter to the Governor, have you?
Its time Sara Kruzan gets out of prison, today is the day, and she needs our help!
If you have a few minutes to spare, read my last post to learn more about Sara and her case. If this is something that resonates with you, take a moment to call or email the Governor. Together we can make this happen!
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,
My name is Tristan Prettyman and I would like to urge you to publicly support clemency for Sara Kruzan.
To be given a life sentence in prison because you shot your pimp at the age of 16, for basically ruining your childhood, for abusing and prostituting you, since you were 11 years old, seems like an absurd sentence to give someone, especially a child.
This woman has spent the last 15 years of her life in prison and during that time she has earned a college degree as well as the recognition of the corrections officers. Despite having no expectation of leaving our prison system, she has worked to better herself and overcome the effects of her youth.
This is a obviously a sign, that she strives for victory over her past.
The more I learn about trafficking, cases like Sara’s sadden me. While I understand that she shot and killed someone, she was only a child. To have your childhood taken from right beneath you, I think anyone in her situation might have done the same thing.
I think its time we set her free, and let her share her story. We could use her story to our advantage. We could start educating our youth, and citizens alike about the current realities of sex trafficking. Trafficking that takes place right here, in our backyards, day in and day out. Its time we let the men that participate in the trafficking of minors know: REAL MEN DONT BUY GIRLS.
As we become better informed about the impacts of sex trafficking in our society and recognize that youths are frequently the victims in those cases, we need to take into account the special circumstances of these victims. Sara Kruzan was such a victim, she has paid her debt to society and we need to recognize that.
Please issue a statement supporting the release of Sara Kruzan.
Thank you for your time.

My friends over at Generate Hope were the first to bring this story to my attention.

Governor Schwarzennegger my name is <your name> and I would like to urge you to publicly support clemency for Sara Kruzan. She was imprisoned without the possibility of parole at the age of 16 after killing the man who had sexually abused her since she was 11 years old and prostituted her since she was 13 years old. She has spent the last 15 years of her life in prison and during that time she has earned a college degree and earned the recognition of the corrections officers. Despite having no expectation of leaving our prison system, she has worked to better herself and overcome the effects of her youth. The Supreme Court has recognized and restated that youth are different from adults and that life without parole is an especially harsh sentence for youths. Sara Kruzan deserved this consideration 15 years ago and she certainly deserves it now.

Dang..You taco lot…
This baby is the taco the town:
Mmm…Tacos tonight! Its mandatory!
It took me 28 years to get to the Grand Canyon.
I actually didn’t even realize it took so long. I didn’t even realize i ever wanted to go, until I got an invitation, and i thought about it and then I decided to go see what all the hoopla was about.
If there is one thing all this time off is good for, its deciding that you want to go to the Grand Canyon and being able to just get on a plane the next day and go.
It was beautiful. BIG. expansive. swirling, and very GRAND. Fancy.
I was actually quite amazed that you could just pull off into any view point, hop the wall, and find a little nook to camp out on.
I said to my friend, “Holy crap, you can just go wherever? No guard rails?” To which he replied…”I think its kinda like, well…you knew there was a big hole so…”
It was very windy on this particular perch, but it was way magical (or maybe it was the wine + the altitude?), almost like if i jumped I might very well relocate into the middle of nowhere. Even the birds were having a hard time navigating. I think they liked it though….I bet its similiar to the gravitron ride at the fair.
Time stands still in the presence of such a monstrosity. You cant help but just breath..a lot, in hopes of taking it all in. At times its like: hmmm thats a big hole, weird….and then your like: What the fuck? This thing looks fake.
Its a trip.
So beautiful. And necessary.
